Relief when you need it most
Recognizing a dental emergency
Not sure if you’re facing a dental emergency? It can be hard to tell sometimes—many patients assume their symptoms are just part of the norm. We recommend seeking help if you’re uncomfortable or experiencing any unusual sensations, at our office, we’ll do our best to fit you in on the same day if the situation calls for it. Here are some signs that you may need to visit your Medford emergency dentist:
- Toothache: Persistent pain is never normal. Whether it’s a cavity, infection, or something else, getting professional care quickly can prevent it from worsening.
- Loose tooth: Adults should never have loose teeth. A loose tooth could be a sign of injury or infection, and should be checked by a dentist right away.
- Bleeding gums: If your gums are bleeding or sore, it might be an early sign of gum disease.
- Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth: Even small damage to a tooth can allow bacteria to enter, leading to infection. Timely treatment helps prevent complications.
- Swollen or sore jaw: A swollen jaw, especially if accompanied by a bad taste in your mouth, could indicate an infection.
- Dental abscess: Signs of an abscess include fever, swelling, pus, and a bad taste. If you’re experiencing any of these, immediate care is crucial.
At Dr. Catt’s office, we’re here to provide guidance and care when you need it most, even after hours for select patients.

What should you do in a dental emergency?
If you experience an injury to your mouth, seek help as soon as possible. The sooner you see Dr. James Catt, the easier it will be to address the issue and prevent further complications.
What should you do if you knock out or chip a tooth?
If a permanent tooth is chipped or knocked out, try to keep it moist. If you can, gently place the tooth back in its socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, put it in milk or tuck it between your cheek and gums until you can visit your Medford emergency dentist. A cold compress on your cheek can also help reduce swelling.
How can I stop a toothache?
Rinse your mouth with warm water, carefully remove any food with dental floss, and avoid putting medication on the tooth or gums. A saltwater rinse and a warm compress can help ease the discomfort. Call us as soon as possible — we’ll guide you from there!
How do I remove sharp food from my gums?
Use dental floss gently to remove anything stuck between your teeth or gums. Avoid using sharp tools to prevent injury. If you can’t remove it safely, let us help!
My pain went away. Do I still need to see a dentist?
Yes! Pain is often a sign of deeper issues. Even if the discomfort subsides, it’s important to check for hidden problems before they worsen.
How much does an emergency dentist appointment cost?
Costs vary depending on the treatment you need to feel better. We’ll make sure you know what to expect before we get started.
